FT. WORTH, Texas - TCU scored touchdowns on its opening two possessions, and then turned things over to kicker Jaden Oberkrom to take a 23-10 lead over West Virginia at halftime.
The Mountaineers have now trailed by double-digit margins at halftime (17 at Oklahoma, 15 vs. Oklahoma State and 10 at Baylor) in all four Big 12 games it has played this season.
Trevone Boykin threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Josh Doctson, took one in from the two, and then let Oberkrom score the remaining nine points of the half.
Oberkrom booted two short field goals of 20 and 23 yards before ending the half with a bang, comfortably splitting the uprights with a 57-yarder at the end of the half. It was the longest field goal an opponent has ever kicked against the Mountaineers.
Boykin completed 18-of-26 passes for 210 yards and also ran seven times for 34 yards, and also took advantage of a penalty-prone WVU defense that was flagged six times for 80 yards. Five of those six infractions came on third down to extend TCU drives.
After falling behind 17-0, West Virginia was able to get into the end zone early in the second quarter when Skyler Howard fired a 32-yard touchdown pass to Shelton Gibson, the sophomore getting behind the Horned Frog secondary on a deep post.
Then after forcing a TCU punt, West Virginia added three more points with 5:02 left in the second quarter when Josh Lambert kicked a 51-yard field goal - his longest of the season.
The Horned Frogs answered with Oberkrom’s second field goal with 1:05 remaining, and TCU got the football back with 16 seconds left when the Mountaineers couldn’t get a first down deep in its own territory.
West Virginia was pinned back at its own nine when Nana Kyeremeh was called for holding on Jovon Durante’s kickoff return.
After KaVontae Turpin made a fair catch of Nick O’Toole’s punt at the TCU 39, West Virginia spotted TCU a quick five when the Mountaineers were flagged for a substitution infraction. Two plays later, Boykin hit Doctson for a 17-yard gain to the Mountaineer 39, where Oberkrom ended the half successfully for the Horned Frogs.
West Virginia will kickoff to TCU to begin the second half.
