Mary Bermingham joined the student-athlete development unit in 2017, working directly with the Mountaineer football program.
In her role as a learning specialist, Bermingham works primarily with student-athletes who have a documented learning disability. She provides one-on-one learning support to help ensure their success in the classroom.
Bermingham coordinates all individual psycho-educational testing for both freshmen and transfer student-athletes, and then develops a plan specific to their academic needs. She also is responsible for monitoring and tracking their academic progress throughout the semester and throughout their academic career.
Bermingham also serves as the staff liaison with the office of accessibility services on campus, where she ensures the student-athletes will have the proper assistance and accommodations necessary to be successful. In addition, she coordinated a pilot reading program, where she collaborated with the reading specialist program on campus to help educate staff members and increase knowledge and skill development in literacy among student-athletes.
Prior to coming to WVU, Bermingham worked as a special education teacher at Stuart High School in Fairfax, Virginia, for three years. She worked with learning and emotionally disabled and at-risk students, assessing individuals, developing academic plans and study skills and evaluating individual progress. She also led faculty meetings on building at-risk relationships and student engagement.
Bermingham also spent time as an instructional assistant at Cooper Middle School in Fairfax, Virginia (2013-14), public health training assistant (2012-13) and as a middle school counseling advocate in Norfolk, Virginia (2011).
She earned her bachelor’s degree in human services and counseling in 2012 at Old Dominion and graduated with honors with her master’s degree in special education for grades K-12 at George Mason in 2016.
Bermingham was a member of the women’s lacrosse team at Old Dominion and earned the Colonial Athletic Association’s Commissioner’s Academic Award. She served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Marymount University during the 2012-13 year.
