Simon Gomez joined West Virginia University in the summer of 2016 and serves as the primary athletics trainer for the men’s soccer, cross country and track and field programs.
A four-year letterwinner and two-time team captain on the Duquesne men’s soccer team, Gomez comes to WVU after serving as a graduate assistant for the Pitt men’s soccer team, where he earned a Master of Science in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences in 2016.
With two seasons as the athletic trainer for the Pitt men’s soccer team and four years as a standout at Duquesne, Gomez brings a wealth of soccer-related experience to the Mountaineers.
As a student-athlete at Duquesne, Gomez earned numerous conference and national accolades. He was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman and was a First Team All-Conference selection twice and a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree. Gomez was recognized by the NSCAA as an All-Region First Team and All-Region Second Team honoree and a Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention. He was also named to the Herman Award Watch List and was the Atlantic 10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship Recipient in the spring of 2014.
In addition to his time as a student-athlete, Gomez was an athletic training student assistant with the women’s soccer and women’s basketball teams. He also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was named to the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll every semester.
Gomez graduated from Duquesne in the spring of 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in psychology.
Along with his work at Duquesne and Pitt, Gomez gained experience at Carnegie Mellon University as a student assistant with the men’s and women’s basketball and soccer programs and the tennis team in the winter and spring of 2014. In the spring and summer of 2013, he worked for the Pittsburgh Power arena football team and was part of the volunteer medical staff for the Special Olympics, both in the summer of 2013 and winter of 2014.
Gomez is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), is NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist Certified (PES), is a NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). Additionally, he is a CPR/AED Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certified.
Gomez and his wife, Elise, reside in Morgantown.
