Dave Serrano, who has won 446 games and taken two different teams to the College World Series in 13 years as a head coach, is in his first season as an assistant coach with the West Virginia baseball team, serving as the pitching coach.
The 2007 National Coach of the Year and three-time conference coach of the year, Serrano is one of just 12 coaches all-time to lead two different teams to the College World Series. He owns a Division I career record of 446-302-1.
One of the most respected and accomplished coaches in collegiate baseball, Serrano comes to WVU following head coaching stints at UC Irvine (2005-07), Cal State Fullerton (2008-11) and Tennessee (2012-17).
In 23 years as a coach at the Division I level, Serrano has helped guide his teams to seven College World Series appearances and 16 NCAA Tournaments, including the 2004 national title at Cal State Fullerton as an assistant coach. As a head coach, he led UC Irvine to the College World Series in 2007 and Cal State Fullerton to Omaha in 2009.
Since Serrano’s coaching career began in 1988 as an assistant at Cerritos College, his teams have won 15 conference titles. He has coached 188 Major League Baseball draft picks, including 11 first-round selections, and 37 have reached the Major Leagues.
Additionally, Serrano has coached two players who have thrown no-hitters. The first, in 2001, was Cal State Fullerton’s Kirk Saarloos, while the second, in 2006, was Glenn Swanson of UC Irvine.
Serrano comes to Morgantown after spending the last six seasons as the head coach at Tennessee, where his recruiting classes were ranked in the top 20 each season.
Following the 2012 season, Serrano served as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, which he guided to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in The Netherlands.
In 2010, Serrano had his first stint with Team USA as the pitching coach of the Collegiate National Team. Along with head coach Bill Kinneberg, he helped guide the American squad to a V FISU Championship silver medal in Tokyo, Japan.
Serrano has coached 20 players who have gone on to star for USA Baseball National Teams, an impressive list that includes eventual Major Leaguers Todd Helton, R.A. Dickey and Augie Ojeda.
Serrano came to Tennessee after four years as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, where he compiled a 175-73 record from 2008-11. He led the Titans to the NCAA Tournament each year, including the College World Series in 2009 and the Super Regionals in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
He was the Big West Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011, and the Titans won the conference in three of his four seasons (2008, 2010 and 2011). Cal State Fullerton won 40 or more games every year, highlighted by a 47-16 mark in 2009 en route to the College World Series.
In four years at Cal State Fullerton, Serrano coached 21 All-Americans, two Big West Players of the Year, one Big West Pitcher of the Year, one conference freshman of the year, three conference freshman pitchers of the year and 35 All-Big West Conference honorees.
Serrano’s Division I head coaching career began at UC Irvine, where he went 114-66-1 from 2005-07. He guided the Anteaters to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2006 and 2007, including their first College World Series in 2007.
He was the Baseball America National Coach of the Year in 2007 after UC Irvine’s College World Series run. Serrano guided the team to a 47-17-1 record, setting the program record for wins in a season.
In his three seasons at Irvine, Serrano coached a two-time All-American, the NCAA’s all-time saves leader and 17 players who earned All-Big West honors.
From 1997-2004, Serrano served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Cal State Fullerton, where his teams went 356-154-1 and made the NCAA Tournament every season. The Titans won a national title in 2004 and made four trips to Omaha.
Following the Titans’ 2004 national-championship run, Baseball America named Serrano the nation’s top assistant coach. CSF went 47-22 that season, winning its fifth conference title since Serrano joined the staff in 1997.
From 1995-96, Serrano was an assistant coach at Tennessee, where he made his first trip to Omaha. He helped guide the Volunteers to NCAA Regional appearances both years in Knoxville and a World Series berth in 1995. The World Series run was UT’s first in more than four decades, as Serrano coached a team that included Helton and Dickey to a school-record 54 wins.
Serrano’s coaching career began at Cerritos College, where he served as an assistant coach from 1988-90 and 1992-94 and was the head coach in 1991. He compiled a 221-88-1 record in his seven seasons, including a 28-16 mark as the head coach, in 1991. In his seven years, Serrano’s teams won five conference championships and a state title in 1989 in his time at Cerritos College.
As head coach in 1991, Serrano was recognized as the South Coast Conference Coach of the Year. His squad won the fourth of five consecutive conference titles.
Serrano played two seasons at Cerritos College. In 1985, he went 12-1 and earned Junior College All-America accolades while leading the Falcons to a state title and a 39-5 record. He then pitched at Cal State Fullerton in 1986, where he recorded a 3-4 record with one save in 15 appearances.
Serrano has participated and hosted clinics and spoken at numerous conferences across the country. He has spoken twice at the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) conference and wrote a chapter for the ABCA’s book, Practice Perfect Baseball, in 2009-10.
Serrano earned his bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University in 2003. He has three sons: Kyle, Zach and Parker. Kyle, who Serrano coached at Tennessee, is a right-handed pitcher in the Houston Astros organization after being drafted in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
