No. 7 West Virginia Prepares for Match at Army on Sunday

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 7-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team caps its first road trip of the season at Army on Sunday, Aug. 30. Kickoff at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field in West Point, N.Y., is set for 1 p.m. ET.
After West Virginia's match at Princeton on Aug. 27, was canceled due to severe weather, Sunday's match will be WVU's first road contest of the year. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+, while live stats are available at WVUsports.com.
Sunday's match marks just the second meeting between WVU and Army, as the two teams met for the first time in 2025. In the first matchup in Morgantown on Sept. 6, Maddie Levy and Kailyn Effah found the back of the net, while an Army own goal helped propel WVU to a 3-0 win. Army was one of three first-time opponents for West Virginia in 2025, as the Mountaineer were 2-0-1 against new opponents last season.
Last time out, West Virginia secured a 2-0 win over Duquesne on Aug. 23, to start the season 3-0, the squad's best start since 2006. Junior forward/defender Sophia Nickel scored the game winner for the third straight match, while redshirt junior defender Gianna Koss also notched her first goal of the season in the match.
Three Mountaineers collected weekly honors for their performances last week. Koss was named to TopDrawerSoccer's National Team of the Week, while senior defender Olivia Shertzer and Nickel were honored as Big 12 Conference Players of the Week. Shertzer was named the defensive player of the week, and Nickel was honored as the offensive player of the week.
Tracy Chao is in her sixth season as the head coach at Army, as the Black Knights enter Sunday's match with a 2-3 overall record in 2026. They are coming off a 3-0 loss to Monmouth on Aug. 27. Kamryn McWhinney leads the offense with three goals on the year, while keeper Karalyn Dail has secured 23 saves between the posts this season.
