
West Virginia Concludes Road Trip With Win at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 13 West Virginia University baseball team defeated Arizona, 7-4, Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Hi Corbett Field. The Mountaineers improve to 20-5 while the Wildcats fall to 9-19.
West Virginia improves to 6-1 all-time in Tucson which includes a regional title in 2024.
The Mountaineers managed only five hits on the night and struck out a season-high 16 times, but benefited from 10 walks, two hit-by-pitches, two passed balls, a wild pitch, and an error. Sophomore Matt Ineich had two hits and two RBI while junior Armani Guzman had two hits and two runs scored. WVU also had five stolen bases for the fifth time this season.
On the mound, senior Carson Estridge earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief, striking out five and allowing one run. Graduate student Reese Bassinger struck out five in 3.2 innings to collect his first save of the season.
Arizona jumped in front with a two-run home run in the second inning, but WVU responded with two runs in the third. The first run came via wild pitch as Ineich scored all the way from second before an error tied up the game at two.
The Mountaineers took the lead in the fourth with three runs on a passed ball, hit-by-pitch, and groundout. Ineich delivered WVU's only RBI hit of the night in the fifth with a two-run single.
The Wildcats got a run in the sixth and the eighth but never brought the tying run to the plate as the Mountaineers held on for the victory.
West Virginia will return home for a weekend series against No. 23 UCF, April 3-5, in a battle between the Big 12's top two teams. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
