Mountaineers Drop Series Opener to UCF

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 13 West Virginia University baseball team dropped its series opener against No. 23 UCF, 5-0, Friday night at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers fall to 20-6 and 7-3 in the Big 12 while the Knights improve to 19-8 and 9-1 in conference play.
UCF scored runs in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, which included two solo home runs from Andrew Williamson.
The Mountaineers had three hits on the night from junior Armani Guzman, sophomore Gavin Kelly, and senior Paul Schoenfeld.
Junior Dawson Montesa struck out seven in four innings while giving up three runs. Graduate student Ian Korn allowed two runs in four innings while striking out five. Freshman Weston Smith finished the night with a scoreless ninth.
West Virginia will look to even the series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
