
Mountaineers Win 10th Straight Matchup Against Cincinnati

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team continued its winning way on the road, defeating Cincinnati 84-76 on Sunday inside Fifth Third Arena. The win moves the Mountaineers to a perfect 5-0 in road games this season.
The Mountaineers made use of a dominant paint presence, scoring a season high 56 points in the paint. WVU also made use of a 33-25 advantage on the glass, including a 13-10 advantage on the offensive end.
Kierra Wheeler led the Mountaineers with 18 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Sydney Woodley and Jordan Thomas each finished with 12 points as Woodley added three steals. Carter McCray finished with a game-high seven rebounds and added 10 points. Jordan Harrison dished out eight assists and added 10 points and four steals.
The Mountaineers led by as many as six points over the opening two minutes before UC settled in and pulled within two points four times over the next six minutes. WVU finished the opening frame with the final seven points, to take a 23-14 lead, scoring four at the line before Riley Makaluskey knocked down a wide-open three on WVU's final possession.
West Virginia controlled play in the second quarter, outscoring Cincinnati 20-12. The Mountaineers used a strong paint presence, pouring in 16 points in the paint. Mountaineer bigs Wheeler and Thomas scored six points each as McCray added four.
The Mountaineers managed their largest lead of the contest in the third quarter, pushing their advantage to 26 points at the 5:25 mark. UC outscored West Virginia 16-3 to the 1:30 mark to cut the WVU lead to 62-50. West Virginia ultimately took a 14-point lead into the fourth.
Cincinnati trimmed the Mountaineer lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, capped off by back-to-back Mya Perry three-pointers. WVU took a 71-62 lead at the final media timeout. UC cut the WVU lead down to as few as seven points with four minutes to play before an 8-0 Mountaineer run, spurred on by paint touched from Wheeler and Thomas, extended the lead out to 15 points. WVU ultimately collected the road win by a final score of 84-76.
West Virginia is now 13-5 all-time against the Bearcats, and 6-3 when playing games on the road. The Mountaineers have won 10 straight meetings and are a perfect 6-0 since Cincinnati joined the Big 12 in 2024.
