
West Virginia Falls to Pitt in Backyard Brawl

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving team lost to the Pitt Panthers at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown on Saturday.
The men's team (2-1) lost to Pitt, 180-119. The women's team (2-2) lost, 206-93.
West Virginia had strong performances in the pool with four Mountaineers winning individual events. Freshman Jake Salcedo rallied late in the men's 1000-yard freestyle (9:18.73) to earn the first victory for WVU.
This win adds another to Salcedo's tremendous freshman campaign, as he has seven individual victories on the year.
Sophomore Joey Stebbins picked up his second individual win of the season, placing first in the 200-yard backstroke with a final time of 1:46.40. Freshman Liam Aleman also earned a win for the men's team, touching the wall at 1:58.15 to win the 200-yard breaststroke.
On the women's side, junior Maddie Smutny was the lone Mountaineer to win an individual event. She won the 200-yard butterfly with a final time of 2:00.31.
In the diving well, redshirt senior Glenn Eloriaga led the men's team with a second place finish on 3-meter (373.65). Sophomore Levi Hellmann placed third with 341.85 total points.
On the women's team, senior Abigail Sullivan placed third on 1-meter with 285.83 points.
West Virginia competes in the Big 12 East Showdown on Jan. 16-17, in Houston.
