FARMVILLE, Va. – The No. 15 West Virginia University men's soccer team improved to 4-1-1 on the season with a 2-0 victory over Longwood, Friday evening at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Junior Pablo Pozos scored his team-high sixth goal of the season while graduate student Carlos Hernando converted a penalty for his first of the season. Senior Marcus Caldeira tallied his fifth assist of the season as well.
Graduate student Marc Bonnaire made two saves in goal to secure his third shutout of the season.
Overall, the Mountaineers outshot Longwood, 11-5, with shots on goal even at two. WVU also had a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks.
In the first half, both teams had dangerous chances as Bonnaire had to make a diving save in the 8th minute. At the end of the half, freshman Sammie Walker nearly put the Mountaineers on the board, but his header hit the crossbar.
In the 71st minute, West Virginia jumped in front as Caldeira found Pozos in the box who fired a shot on goal. The Longwood defender got a boot on it, but could not keep it out of the back of the net.
In the 77th minute, the Mountaineers went down to 10 men as senior Felix Ewald was sent off with a red card. However, WVU stayed on the attack and earned a penalty in the 81st minute. Hernando stepped up to the spot and buried it for his first goal of the season.
