Thursday's matchup marks just the fifth all-time meeting between West Virginia and Marshall, as the Mountaineers hold an undefeated, 4-0 advantage in the series. The two programs last met in 2011, with the Mountaineers coming away with a 3-0 win at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Thursday's contest marks the first played in Huntington since 1999, while it is just the second time the two teams have met there.
Last time out, a trio of second-half scores helped lift West Virginia to a 3-0 win over Army inside Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Sept. 6. Sophomore forward
Maddie Levy opened the scoring in the 54th minute, before WVU went on to add scores in the 71st and 83rd minutes off an own goal from Army and the boot of freshman forward
Kailyn Effah, respectively.
Levy's score was credited as the game winner, while Effah's was the first goal of her WVU career. Senior forward
Taylor White was credited with the assist on Levy's goal. West Virginia recorded 18 shots, nine shots on goal and six corner kicks, and the game marked the sixth this year where WVU has tallied double-digit shots and outshot its opponent.
White, Levy and junior forward
Abbey Olexa are tied for the team lead with three goals this season, as the trio is tied for eighth in the Big 12. White paces the offense with four assists and 10 points, ranking third in the Big 12 in total points.
Rafa Simoes is in his second season as the head women's soccer coach at Marshall, after being hired to lead the squad in December 2023. Marshall enters Thursday's contest with a 4-1 record so far in 2025, as the squad is coming off a 3-2 loss to Murray State on Aug. 31. Bailey Fisher leads the Herd's offense so far this season with three goals and seven points. In goal, Emma Durand has registered six saves on the year.
