MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 10, 2025) – After helping the Mountaineers earn a shutout last week, junior defender
Nyema Ingleton has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
The accolade marks the first Big 12 weekly honor of Ingleton's career, while she is the first Mountaineer to be tabbed the defensive player of the week since
Annika Leslie on Oct. 9, 2024. The weekly award also marks the second for WVU this season, after redshirt junior goalkeeper
Bailey Herfurth earned West Virginia's first honor on Sept. 3 as the goalkeeper of the week.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Ingleton helped the Mountaineer defense tally its fourth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over Army on Sept. 6. She played all 90 minutes in the match, marking her second straight game playing the full 90 minutes. Ingleton and the WVU defense held the Black Knights to just three shots and zero shots on goal, marking the second time this season that West Virginia has denied a team a shot on frame in a match.
With four games this season playing 80 or more minutes, Ingleton leads the team with 500 minutes played so far this year.
Up next, West Virginia begins a four-game road swing with its nonconference finale at Marshall on Thursday, Sept. 11. Kickoff at Hoops Family Field in Huntington, W.Va., is tabbed for 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
