MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind junior forward Abbey Olexa's first career brace, the West Virginia University women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Dayton at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday afternoon.
 
A native of Pine Beach, New Jersey, Olexa scored one in the first half and added another in the second to help the Mountaineers improve to 3-2 on the season. Her brace marked the 133rd two-goal performance by a Mountaineer all-time and the second this season after sophomore Maddie Levy scored two in WVU's win over Duquesne on Aug. 28.
 
Of note, West Virginia has now seen a two-goal scorer in back-to-back contests for the first time since 2014. Kailey Utley scored two against Oklahoma State on Oct. 24, before Amandine Pierre-Louis notched a pair of goals against Oklahoma on Oct. 26.
 
After about 20 minutes of scoreless play, Olexa broke through in the 25th minute to put the Mountaineers on the board first. She used some fancy footwork to create an open window and send the ball in for the score. Junior midfielder Anna Hauer was credited with the assist on Olexa's first tally, marking her second helper of the season.
 
Olexa then completed the brace in the early minutes of the second half, accepting a pass from Levy and dribbling into the 18-yard box before sending an excellent, left-footed strike into the upper right corner of the net. Levy's assist also was her second of the season.
 
In the win, West Virginia recorded its fifth game this season with double-digit shots, firing 18 in the match. The Mountaineers have now outshot their opponents in every game this season, with a total advantage of 85-28. Eleven of WVU's 18 shots were on target, while it also tallied six corner kicks in the match. Olexa and Levy led the way with three shots apiece.
 
The Mountaineer defense earned its third shutout of the season, holding Dayton to just three shots on goal in the match. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth earned her second straight clean sheet, saving all three of Dayton's shots on frame. Additionally, WVU now improves to 2-0 all-time against the Flyers, earning the win on its first-ever trip to Dayton.
 
Up next, West Virginia returns home to welcome Army to Morgantown on Saturday, Sept. 6. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+. It's WVU's annual Pups at the Pitch match, and fans are invited to bring their dogs out to enjoy an evening of soccer at DDSS.
