Kansas State Rallies for Walk-Off Victory Over WVU

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 12 West Virginia University baseball team fell to Kansas State, 8-7, Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium. The Mountaineers fall to 39-9 and 18-5 in the Big 12 while the Wildcats improve to 29-20 and 15-10 in conference play.
The Wildcats scored six runs in the ninth as WVU suffered its second straight walk-off loss.
Senior Jace Rinehart went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Kyle West and junior Logan Sauve each had three hits and an RBI. On the mound, redshirt senior Griffin Kirn threw 7.0 innings and allowed two runs while striking out three.
WVU took the lead in the fourth inning with three runs as junior Sam White had an RBI double to get the Mountaineers on the board before Rinehart hit a two-run home run, his team-leading eighth of the season. In the fifth, Sauve extended the lead with an RBI single.
Kansas State got on the board in the seventh with a two-run home run before the Mountaineers answered with two runs in the eighth on a fielder's choice and an error. West added another run in the ninth with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Wildcats began the inning with four straight hits to score two runs. A fielder's choice and a single made it a one-run game before a groundout tied the game. KSU then hit a single to complete the comeback.
The Mountaineers did make some history in the field as they turned five double plays to tie a program record.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday with first pitch for game two set for 5 p.m. ET.
