MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team defeated Utah, 6-3, Friday evening to open the series with the Big 12 newcomer. The Mountaineers improve to 25-4 and 5-3 in the Big 12 while the Utes fall to 13-14 and 2-8 in conference play.
West Virginia hit four home runs in the game – solo shots from senior Kyle West, senior Jace Rinehart, and junior Logan Sauve, as well as a two-run home run from senior Grant Hussey which proved to be the game-winner in the eighth inning.
Redshirt senior Griffin Kirn was stellar on the mound, striking out 14 batters in 6.2 innings while giving up three runs. It is the most strikeouts for a Mountaineer pitcher since Jacob Watters struck out 15 against Texas in 2022.
Sophomore Chase Meyer earned his fifth win of the season with 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three.
The Utes took the lead in the second on a solo home run before West and Rinehart went back-to-back in the third to put WVU in front. Sauve's third home run of the season in the fifth extended the Mountaineer lead.
After striking out the side in the sixth, Kirn faced trouble in seventh as the Utes began the inning with a single and double. He struck out the next guy and then got a pop up before handing the ball to Meyer. After a hit-by-pitch, Cameron Gurney hit a two-run single, but Meyer got a strikeout to keep the game even.
With the fog rolling in, Hussey provided the moment of the game, hitting a two-run home run that disappeared into the night sky, the 41st of his career. An error by the Utes added an unearned insurance run for the Mountaineers.
Utah got the tying run to the plate in the ninth before Meyer got a strikeout to end the game.
The two teams will close out the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
