MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women's basketball head coach
Mark Kellogg has announced the addition of Kierra "Meme" Wheeler (Minneapolis, Minn. / Norfolk State / Daytona State) to a grant-in-aid for the 2025-26 academic year.
"We are pumped to get Meme in a West Virginia uniform," Kellogg said. "She has produced at a high level on a championship team and has NCAA tournament experience."
"She is a tough, hard-nosed competitor that will bring a winning mindset to our team. She can score all over the floor and is a tough rebounder inside. Her size and strength will allow her to guard multiple positions. Meme will make a big impact for us, and we welcome her to Almost Heaven."
The 6-foot-1 forward from Minneapolis, Minnesota has played three seasons of DI collegiate basketball and adds one season at the junior college level. She has one remaining season of eligibility after playing the last three seasons at Norfolk State.
Wheeler has netted 1,434 points, 862 rebounds, and 160 blocks across three seasons at Norfolk State. She has played in 96 career contests, making 94 starts, while recording 2,868 minutes played. She averages 14.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for her career. From the floor, Kierra shoots at 50.1 percent and adds 343 offensive rebounds to her career stat line.
Kierra played in all but one game for the Spartans last season, receiving All-MEAC First Team and All-Defensive Team honors. She averaged 15.6 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, ranking ninth in the nation in total blocks. Her efforts helped lead the Spartans to their fourth-ever MEAC Tournament title as she took home the MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Award.
As a junior, she brought home a plethora of honors, being named the 2024 MEAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year and being selected to the All-MEAC First Team, MEAC All-Defensive Team, MEAC All-Tournament Team, and Preseason All-MEAC First Team. Additionally, she was named to Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Midseason Watch List and the BOXTOROW HBCU Player of the Year. She earned seven MEAC Weekly Honors after appearing in 32 games and making 32 starts. Her 17.6 points per game and 9.7 rebounds mark a career-high for a season.
Kierra was also named the MEAC Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 Women's Basketball Tournament and garnered All-MEAC Second Team and Defensive Team honors as a sophomore. She averaged the second-best scoring mark on the team with 354 points with an average of 11.1 points per game. She recorded a team-high 270 total rebounds, 115 offensive and 155 defensive, with 32 blocks, the second-best on the team.
During her freshman season at Daytona State, she was named to the FCSAA All-Central Conference First Team after playing in 22 games, making 21 starts. There she averaged 12.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 106-of-216 (49.1 percent) from the field.
At Robbinsdale Cooper High School, Kierra was selected to the all-conference first team all four years. She averaged 18.3 points, 13.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.1 blocks, and 1.6 steals per game as a senior and reached the 1,000-point club by the end of her sophomore year.
Wheeler intends to pursue her master's degree in sport coaching while at West Virginia University. She is the daughter of Mario and Katrena Wheeler.
