JJ Quinerly tied a program record with 38 points to push the Mountaineers to a perfect 16-0 at home with a 75-46 win over Utah on Wednesday evening inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
The Norfolk, Virginia native got into foul trouble in the opening quarter and scored just two points before dropping 12 in the second,15 in the third and nine in the fourth. The scoring feat marks the third time in program history a WVU has reached the 38 point mark, joining Christie Lambert (1995-99) and Meg Bulger (2004-08).
The undefeated home record is the fourth time in program history a team has finished the regular season with a perfect record. It is tied for the second most home wins in a season behind winning 17 during the 2009-10 season and 16 during the 1992 season.
The Mountaineers have won 17 straight contests at home, dating back to last season, which is tied for the second-longest home win streak in program history.
Quinerly finished the game 16 of 21 from the floor as her 16 made field goals are tied for the most in a game in program history. Her 707 career field goals made is the third most all-time by a Mountaineer.
The Utes came into the game averaging 10.2 three per game this season while hitting 48% of their attempts from beyond the arc. The West Virginia defense limited Utah to just seven made threes and a 21.9% mark from deep.
West Virginia produced an 8-0 run in the middle part of the open frame to build a 10-2 lead at the four-minute mark. WVU and the Utes traded baskets the rest of the way to an eight-point West Virginia lead after 10. Six difference Mountaineers scored points in the opening quarter.
Leading 15-11 in the early stages of the second, Quinerly and Shaw knocked down back-to-back threes. The offensive rhythm forced Utah into an early timeout at the 6:23 mark and pushed the Mountaineers to its second double-digit lead of the quarter.
Quinerly scored seven straight points late in the quarter, running her quarter total to 12 points, and pushing the WVU lead to its largest of the half at 15 points. Utah connected from deep in the final minute to give WVU a 30-18 advantage at the break.
Quinerly continued rolling offensively out of the break scoring 15 of the Mountaineers' 21 points in the third. The effort pushed WVU to a 51-36 lead at the end of the quarter. Quinerly knocked down 7 of 9 attempts from the floor in the quarter.
The Mountaineers rolled in the fourth, outscoring the Utes 24-10 to produce the team's 21
st double-figure win of the season and the 16
th by 20 or more points.
West Virginia closes out the regular season on Saturday on the road against Cincinnati. Tipoff inside Fifth Thirds Arena in Cincinnati is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
