NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The West Virginia University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Lipscomb on Sunday, winning game one, 5-0, before taking the second game, 4-2. The Mountaineers improve to 6-0 on the year while the Bisons fall to 2-4.
 
It is the best start to a season for West Virginia since beginning 7-0 in 1966 and just the seventh time in program history opening the season with six straight wins.
 
The Mountaineers showed off their pop at the plate on Sunday with redshirt junior Chase Swain and senior Kyle West each hitting their first home runs of the season in game one while sophomore Michael Perazza clocked his first homer of the year in game two.
 
On the mound, West Virginia picked up its first shutout of the year as junior Robby Porco, sophomore Chase Meyer, sophomore Joseph Fredericks, freshman Bryson Hoff, and freshman Bryant Yoak combined for the clean sheet while allowing just two hits. Porco and Meyer each struck out five with Yoak adding two in his first collegiate inning of work.
 
Game one remained scoreless until the fifth when Swain led off the inning with a solo home run to right-center field. A few batters later, West crushed a two-run shot to right field to make it 3-0.
 
The Mountaineers added a pair of runs in the seventh on groundouts from junior Sam White and senior Jace Rinehart.
 
The biggest threat by the Bisons in game one came in the fourth when they had bases loaded with two outs and the game still scoreless. Meyer came out of the bullpen, inheriting a 2-0 count, and battled back to strike out Brady Miller and keep Lipscomb off the board.
 
After not playing in the first game, Perazza jumpstarted the Mountaineers in game two with a solo home run in the first inning.
 
The Bisons evened up the game in the fourth before White doubled in junior Logan Sauve in the fifth to regain the lead. It was short-lived, however, as Lipscomb squared things up once again in the bottom of the fifth.
 
The Mountaineers retook the lead in the seventh as sophomore Armani Guzman walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a passed ball. Senior Brodie Kresser added an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out RBI single.
 
Junior Carson Estridge earned the win by tossing the final 4.2 innings, allowing no runs while striking out five.
 
West Virginia will look for the series sweep on Monday with first pitch set for 12 p.m. ET.
