
Mountaineers Bounce Back with Big Win Over Mercyhurst

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 25 West Virginia University women's basketball team got back in the win column on Friday night, defeating Mercyhurst 97-51 inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown.
The 97 points scored are a season high for the Mountaineers as they knocked down 33 field goals on 52.4% shooting. West Virginia distributed the ball effectively against an undersized Laker roster, finishing with 22 assists and five in double figures.
Senior guard Jordan Harrison finished with a game-high 19 points and added five assists and three steals. Junior forward Carter McCray had 15 points and seven rebounds, both WVU career highs, as graduate forward Kierra Wheeler finished with 14 points, a game high of eight boards and five steals.
Senior guard Sydney Shaw had one of the best nights of the season, filling the stat sheet with 13 points, six assists and six steals. Her assists and steals match career marks. Junior guard Gia Cooke finished with 12 points.
The Mountaineers opened the game on a 16-0 run and never looked back. Mercyhurst scored its first points of the game at the four-minute mark and went just 2 of 11 from the floor in the opening frame. Both Lakers made field goals were three-point attempts, and they coughed up seven turnovers. WVU led 23-6 at the end of the first, scoring 12 points off Mercyhurst turnover.
West Virginia continued to roll in the second quarter, shooting 62.5 percent from the floor as seven Mountaineers scored. WVU outscored the Lakers 14-1 over the final three minutes of the half to push its lead to as many as 34 points. The Lakers hit a late three as WVU took a 49-18 lead into halftime.
The Mountaineers pushed their lead to as many as 46 in the third and 47 in the fourth before collecting a 46-point win over Mercyhurst. The margin of victory is the largest this season.
With the win, West Virginia is 2-0 all-time against the Lakers, including a 2-0 mark at home.
Of note, the Mountaineers have not lost at home to a non-Power 5 opponent since Dec. 20, 2012, vs. Duquesne.
Next up, West Virginia continues its home when it welcomes Texas Southern to Morgantown. Tipoff inside Hope Coliseum is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Monday, Dec. 8.
