MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Down to just five players for the second half, the West Virginia women's basketball team overcame a three-point deficit to upset No. 15-ranked Duke, 57-49, at the Greenbrier Tipoff.
All of the Mountaineers' first half scoring, including four starters, could not play in the second half after being disqualified at the end of the second quarter. That is when Sydney Shaw, Sydney Woodley, Riley Makalusky, Celia Riviere and Loghan Johnson stole the show, forcing them to play the final 20 minutes alone.
With Duke leading 23-20 to start the second half, the Mountaineers quickly regained the lead with two points off of technical free throws from senior guard Sydney Shaw. Senior forward Celia Riviere then converted a layup to put the Mountaineers in front.
Duke responded and took a one-point lead minutes later at 27-27. It was a Riviere hook shot that spurred on a 16-2 WVU run that included seven points from Makalusky, five points from Shaw and three from Rivière. The Mountaineers took a 44-32 lead into the fourth quarter. WVU led by as many as 13 points in the frame.
West Virginia and the Blue Devils exchanged buckets early in the fourth before two jumpers from Shaw and senior guard Sydney Woodley and an offensive rebound putback from Riviere pushed the WVU lead to 52-37. The 15-point lead was the Mountaineers' largest of the night.
Duke made five straight baskets to trim the Mountaineer advantage down to just five points with under a minute to play. Shaw then cashed in on five free throw attempts to put the game on ice.
The Mountaineers got to the foul line all night and took full advantage. WVU finished the game with a 20 of 26 mark from the charity stripe to help offset a 36.2% mark from the field. Duke also struggled from the field, shooting just 37%.
The 49 points allowed are the fewest a team has allowed against a top-25 opponent this season.
Shaw finished with a game-high 16 points as Gia Cooke and Riviere added 12 points. Shaw also added eight rebounds to narrowly miss out on her second straight double double.
During the Mark Kellogg era, West Virginia moves to 6-12 against ranked teams, including 2-3 when playing at a neutral site.
The Mountaineers are back in action at home for Education Day on Thursday, Nov. 20 when they take on Appalachian State. The contest is scheduled for a 10:15 a.m. ET tipoff.
