
West Virginia Wins WV State Games

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams won the West Virginia State Games on Saturday at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
It was a dominant performance by the Mountaineers as the men's and women's teams each placed first among eight teams. West Virginia won all but one event throughout the meet.
Sophomore Nick Lugo had an exceptional performance for the men's team, winning three individual events. Lugo placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.20), 200-yard butterfly (1:52.74) and 100-yard butterfly (50.19).
Sophomore MJ Gilligan continued her performance from a week ago with two victories on the day. Gilligan won the women's 200-yard butterfly (2:09.35) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.61).
West Virginia had multiple freshmen make an impact as freshman Delia Ostafi won the women's 200-yard freestyle (1:54.24), and she placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.71). Freshman Jake Salcedo took first in the men's 1000-yard freestyle (9:32.03).
Freshman Rafael Mimoso also made a major impact in his first collegiate meet, winning the men's 100-yard breaststroke (56.67) and placing third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.30).
Junior Maddie Smutny won two individual events, placing first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.69) and first in the 100-yard freestyle (53.30).
Senior Gabriela Martin was dominant in the women's 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 24.62 to win the event.
