
Mountaineers Head to Newark to Face Delaware

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams face the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. at Rawstrom Natatorium in Newark, Delaware.
This is the first action for the men's swimming and diving team since the West Virginia State Games on Oct. 4. The women's swimming and diving team (1-0) defeated Marshall its last time out in Huntington, W.Va., on Oct. 10.
Against the Thundering Herd, the Mountaineers had impressive performances across the board. Junior Maddie Smutny set a pool record for the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium and posted a top-10 program time for the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 4:50.29.
Senior Olivia Busch placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle as she also posted a top-10 program time, touching the wall at 10:06.43.
In the diving well, senior Abigail Sullivan earned her first win of the season on 1-meter with a final score of 262.95 points.
At the WV State Games, the men's team dominated as it won all but one event. Throughout the season, West Virginia has had strong performances from young talent. Freshman Jake Salcedo has posted two top-three finishes this year, with a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle at the WV State Games.
He also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle at the Florida State University Invitational to earn Big 12 weekly honors.
