LAWRENCE, Kan. –
The West Virginia University women's soccer team (9-2-3, 4-0-3 Big 12) played to a 2-2 draw with Kansas at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence on Thursday night.
It was a back-and-forth match that saw all four goals scored in the first 45 minutes. The Mountaineers were on the board first, before the Jayhawks responded with two goals of their own in a 10-minute span. West Virginia then equalized in the 40th minute to make the score 2-2, which would hold until the final whistle despite offensive pressure from both teams in the second half.
A KU own goal in the 13th minute gave the Mountaineers the early advantage, after senior forward
Taylor White's cross was errantly cleared by the KU defense. However, Kansas responded in the 29th and 37th minutes to take a brief 2-1 lead over West Virginia.
It didn't last long though, as redshirt freshman forward Alexis Ré scored on an impressive shot from about 30 yards out in the 40th minute. The rocket of a shot went out of reach for the KU keeper as Ré recorded her first career goal with the equalizer.
Despite 11 shots between the two teams in the second half, neither could find the go-ahead score and the match would end in the 2-2 draw.
West Virginia was outshot in the match, 13-7, for just the fourth time this season, while KU also took a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Jayhawks dominated corner kicks Thursday night, earning 11 corners compared to just one for the Mountaineers.
With the draw, WVU remains unbeaten in Big 12 play at 4-0-3 and extends its unbeaten stretch to 11 in a row. The all-time series between West Virginia and Kansas now moves to 10-4-3 in favor of the Mountaineers.
West Virginia will round out the road portion of its regular-season schedule on Sunday, Oct. 19, when it caps the road trip at Kansas State. Kickoff at Buser Family Park in Manhattan, Kansas, is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
