White’s Late Brace Lifts Mountaineers Over Houston

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team (9-2-2, 4-0-2 Big 12) collected a late come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Houston at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Friday night.
With the win, the Mountaineers are riding a 10-game unbeaten streak for the first time since the 2017 season, when WVU strung together an 11-match unbeaten streak.
Two different Mountaineers found the back of the net in the victory, including sophomore midfielder Maddie Levy and senior forward Taylor White. White scored twice, with her second strike credited as the game winner. It marks her seventh career game-winning goal and was the 24th tally of her Mountaineer career.
Houston opened the scoring in the 43rd minute and would take that 1-0 advantage into the halftime locker room.
Levy opened the scoring for the Mountaineers for the third consecutive game, striking in the 56th minute. The score was her sixth goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Ava Arnold was tabbed with the assist after she headed a ball across the box to an open Levy, who leveled the score with a shot past the keeper towards the far post.
Houston scored another go-ahead goal in the 80th minute to take a brief 2-1 lead in the late stages of the match.
White took control of the match for the Mountaineers a minute later when she struck twice, just a minute apart. Whites first goal came in the 81st minute off another corner kick. The ball was sent into a waiting Arnold inside the six-yard box, whose header found White waiting on the doorstep of the goal. White finished the play just across the goal line to level the score at two.
Moments later, White and the Mountaineers claimed their first lead of the match after capitalizing on a Houston goal kick miscue. Junior midfielder Anna Hauer and senior forward Ajanae Respass each made aggressive plays on the ball before it found its way to White just outside the penalty area. White took one touch before finishing low, at the near post, past the outreached arms of the Houston keeper.
White's brace marks the second time in three matches she has scored twice in a game.
West Virginia controlled possession for the final eight minutes on the way to their fourth win in Big 12 Conference play.
WVU now heads back on the road for its final road games of the regular season with a swing through the Sunflower State. The road trip begins at Kansas on Thursday, Oct. 16. Kickoff at the Jayhawks' Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
