Mountaineers Fall to Marshall in Extras

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team fell to Marshall, 3-2, in 11 innings on Wednesday at Jack Cook Field. The Mountaineers fall to 19-13 while the Thundering Herd improve to 12-19.
Sophomore Logan Sauve had two hits and an RBI while junior Grant Hussey hit his eighth home run of the season.
On the mound, sophomore Gavin Van Kempen got the start and threw 3.2 scoreless innings while striking out four. Graduate student Hambleton Oliver also contributed with 1.1 scoreless innings and a pair of strikeouts.
After a scoreless first, Hussey pushed WVU out front with an opposite-field home run, the 33rd of his career, just two shy of the West Virginia program record.
Marshall tied up the game with a run in the sixth before Sauve put the Mountaineers back in front with an RBI single in the seventh.
In the bottom of the ninth, an unearned run for Marshall evened up the score as the game headed to extras.
The Mountaineers had a chance in the 11th inning as they put the first two runners on, but Marshall turned a double play on a pickoff, ending the threat.
In the bottom of the 11th, the Herd walked it off as Caden Keiser delivered an RBI single.
West Virginia will be back home this weekend against No. 17 UCF. First pitch from Kendrick Family Ballpark on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
