MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior
Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track and field team set the program record in the women's mile on Saturday night at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in Boston, Massachusetts.
In her third appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championship, McCabe raced for a program record and personal best time of 4:29.26. The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native, claimed first team All-America honors in her first appearance in the event on the championship level.
This marks the eighth All-America honor for McCabe, as she joins Kate Vermeulen (1999), Keri Bland (2009), Kaylyn Christopher (2010) and Kelly Williams (2013) as the fifth runner in school history to become an All-American in the indoor women's mile.
"We had a big goal this winter to give Ceili the required experience to aid in the development of her becoming a world class distance runner," said WVU coach
Sean Cleary. "While we had higher goals today, we are quite pleased with the versatility she has shown this season."
McCabe entered the championship weekend with the seventh fastest time in the women's mile nationally, after registering a time of 4:30.24 at the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge in New York, New York, on Jan. 27.
Next, West Virginia will open the indoor season on March 15-16 at the USF Alumni Invitational which will be held at the USF Track and Field Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
