BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The West Virginia University baseball team fell to Western Kentucky, 4-3, on Sunday to close out a four-game series. WKU improves to 8-5 while the Mountaineers fall to 7-6.
Sophomore Benjamin Lumsden and Ellis Garcia each had two hits on the day while junior Kyle West hit his first home run as a Mountaineer.
The WVU bullpen was spotless as redshirt-sophomore David Hagaman, freshman Joseph Fredericks, and sophomore Gavin Van Kempen combined to throw 7.2 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out seven.
After a scoreless first, West gave the Mountaineers the lead with a solo home run in the second. The lead did not last long, however, as WKU answered with four runs in the home half.
The Mountaineers got one run back in the fourth on freshman Aaron Jamison's first career hit, a single to score West before getting within one in the seventh on a run-scoring groundout by sophomore Skylar King.
West Virginia had its best chance of the game in the eighth inning, loading the bases with no outs, but two strikeouts and a flyout ended the threat.
The Mountaineers will return home on Thursday to begin Big 12 play against BYU. First pitch from Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark is set for 3 p.m.
