MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team returns home for a midweek matchup with Akron, Tuesday evening at Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
The game will be available to stream on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and can heard on the Mountaineer Sports Network as well as The Varsity Network, the WVU Gameday App and WVUSports.com. Live stats will also be available on WVUSports.com.
The Mountaineers enter the game with a 14-10 record after taking two of three on the road at No. 17 Oklahoma. The weekend got off to an inauspicious start as the Sooners threw a combined no-hitter on Friday night, but WVU responded on Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader.
Senior Reed Chumley leads the team with a .339 batting average and is tied with junior Grant Hussey for the team lead in home runs with five. Nine different players have double-digit RBI for the Mountaineers led by 16 from sophomores Sam White and Benjamin Lumsden.
Sophomore Gavin Van Kempen will get the start for the Mountaineers on Tuesday. He is 4-1 with a 3.29 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 13.2 innings of work. Akron has yet to announce a starter.
Led by head coach Bryan Faulds in his first year at Akron, the Zips are 5-17 in 2024.
Nicky Sackett leads Akron with a .313 batting average while Max Bowman and Sam Seeker have two home runs to lead the team.
Sam Perkins has a 3.31 ERA in eight appearances out of the bullpen.
