CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team saw its season come to an end, Sunday, falling to No. 11-seed Virginia, 2-1, at Klöckner Stadium.

Junior Marcus Caldeira scored for West Virginia, his 11^th of the season, while graduate student Simon Carlson had an assist.

Overall, the Mountaineers outshot the Cavaliers, 16-5 and had a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. WVU also had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

West Virginia jumped out to an early lead in the third minute as Carlson sent a corner into the box where it hit a head and bounced up before landing at the foot of Caldeira, who fired a shot into the upper netting.

Virginia answered just three minutes later on a goal by Albin Gashi to even up the contest. In the 33^rd minute, the Cavaliers took the lead as AJ Smith found the back of the net.

In the second half, Caldeira had a trio of chances in the 57^th and 69^th, and 72^nd minute but the Virginia keeper was there each time to make the save. Junior Felix Ewald also had an opportunity in the 60^th minute, but his shot went just wide.

West Virginia kept looking for the equalizer, but all its remaining shots ended up off target.

The Mountaineers, the Sun Belt regular season and tournament champions, finish the season at 13-2-7. Virginia improves to 11-6-3 and advances to the Round of 16 where it will host Massachusetts.
