"We're really excited to go down here and face off against the other Mountaineers," seventh-year WVU coach
Tim Flynn said. "App State is a team that always competes really hard and has tough kids, so I think this will be a real test for our guys."
West Virginia and App State collide with one another for just the second time in the all-time series and first when the Gold and Blue came away with a 10-point win (26-16) on neutral grounds in 1985. That year sparked WVU to set the program record for most consecutive seasons with double-digit victories (four) from 1985 to 1988. Most recently, West Virginia's first Big 12 champion Dylan Cottrell transferred back home in 2016 after being named the 2014 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and winning the SoCon championship at 149 pounds during his two seasons at Appalachian State (2014 & 2015).
Coach JohnMark Bentley leads the Black and Gold into its first home dual of the season against WVU with a 144-79-1 overall record. During his 16 seasons at the helm, Bentley has guided App State to seven regular-season SoCon Championships (2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023) and four SoCon Tournament Championships (2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024) as well.
In the latest polls, West Virginia makes its fourth straight appearance in the top 25 of the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, staying at No. 19. Six Mountaineers also remain in the fourth edition of FloWrestling's rankings, including No. 25
Jett Strickenberger (133), No. 14
Jordan Titus (141), No. 3
Ty Watters (149), No. 4
Peyton Hall (165), No. 30
Brody Conley (174) and No. 33
Austin Cooley (197). One Mountaineer sporting the Black and Gold enters the dual ranked as well – No. 10 Will Miller (165).
