HOUSTON, Texas (Oct. 24, 2024) – The West Virginia University women's soccer team prepares to cap the regular season on the road at Houston on Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff at UH's Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston, Texas, is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
The match will be broadcast on ESPN+, while live stats from the game also are available at WVUsports.com.
Friday's matchup marks just the second meeting all-time between West Virginia and Houston. The two teams met for the first time in 2023 in the Cougars' inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference. Houston earned a 2-1 win over the Mountaineers last season. UH scored first in the match and although Taylor White found an equalizer just two minutes later, the Cougars scored another goal to tally the win.
Of note, Friday's contest marks the second straight season the two teams have met in Houston.
Last time out, West Virginia recorded a 2-0 win over Colorado on Senior Day at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Oct. 20. The Mountaineers used goals from a pair of seniors to secure the victory. Midfielder Lisa Schöppl found the back of the net in the first half to put WVU ahead, before forward Aria Bilal scored an insurance tally in the second half for the two-goal win. Schöppl's score was credited as the game winner, the first of her career. Fifth-year senior midfielder Lilly McCarthy assisted Schöppl's game winner, while freshman forward Jordyn Wilson assisted Bilal's goal
Junior forward Ajanae Respass is pacing the WVU offense this season with six goals and 16 points, while McCarthy leads the team with five assists. White is second on the squad in goals with five this year.
Jaime Frias is in his third season as the head coach at Houston. The Cougars are 4-11-1 so far this season, including 1-9 in Big 12 play. They are coming off a 3-0 loss at BYU on Oct. 21. Juliet Moore leads the team with five goals and 10 points this season. Olivia Dietrich and Maggie Manning have split time between the posts for Houston this season, putting together a combined 0.734 save percentage and notching 94 total saves.
