
Mountaineers Complete Road Swing at Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – The West Virginia University women's soccer team completes its two-game road swing through the Lone Star State when it travels to Houston to take on the Cougars on Sunday, Oct. 1. Kickoff at the Carl Lewis International Complex is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Sunday's match marks the first-ever meeting between West Virginia and Houston, as the two teams meet in the Cougars' inaugural season as members of the Big 12 Conference. The Cougars are set to become the Mountaineers' 120th different opponent all-time, as well as their second this season. Over the last five years, WVU is 6-2-2 against first-time opponents, including 0-1 this season.
Last time out, fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey and the Mountaineer defense shut out the nation's top offense with a 0-0 draw at No. 21 Texas on Sept. 28. Massey collected a career-best nine saves in the clean sheet to help West Virginia record the draw, which marked WVU's fifth of the season. Texas outshot West Virginia 19-7, including 9-2 in shots on goal, while the two teams were level with four corner kicks apiece.
Despite the final stat line, the two teams were nearly even in possession, with UT narrowly topping West Virginia with 51% possession compared to WVU's 49%. Six different Mountaineers registered a shot against Texas, while senior midfielder AJ Rodriguez led the attack with two shots.
So far this season, sophomore forward Taylor White leads the team with five goals and 12 points, while junior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran holds the team lead in assists (4) and shots (23).
Jaime Frias is in his second season as the head coach of the Houston women's soccer team, leading the Cougars to a 6-7-3 record in his first season in 2022. Houston enters Sunday's match 6-5-1 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12, coming off a 2-1 loss at Iowa State on Sept. 28. Cameryn Maddox leads the offense with seven goals and 15 points, while keeper Olivia Dietrich has collected 45 saves on the year.
