MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – There were some unique happenings on Tuesday night at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark in what is becoming a unique season for West Virginia University baseball.
An overflow crowd of 3,475 watched the 18th-ranked Mountaineers improve to 30-11 overall with an impressive 14-2 victory over Penn State two nights ago. It was the third-largest regular season crowd in school history, trailing just the 3,494 that showed up to watch WVU defeat 13th-ranked Texas Tech 4-3 on April 13, 2019, and the 3,487 who attended West Virginia's 5-4 win over Pitt 10 days prior to the triumph over the Red Raiders.
It was only the 15th time since the new ballpark opened in 2015 that a crowd of more than 3,000 showed up to watch a Mountaineer baseball game.
The facility attendance record is 4,355 during West Virginia's 6-2 NCAA Tournament victory over Fordham on May 31, 2019.
West Virginia athletics marketing assistant director Jasmine Werninger is hopeful of attracting another 3,000+ crowd when West Virginia and Pitt meet next Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
Standing room only tickets are all that remain for that game.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers had two grand-slam home runs in the Penn State victory when JJ Wetherholt and Grant Hussey had bases-clearing blasts in the third and fourth innings.
It was just the third-known time that's happened in school history out of 31 instances when multiple players homered and had at least four RBI in the same game.
The first happened on April 20, 1957, in Blacksburg, Virginia, when Ronnie Retton and Glenn Higgins hit grand slams in a 10-8 loss to Virginia Tech.
And it also occurred 28 years later, on May 34, 1985, in the opening game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Hawley Field when Bob Bernardo and John Kuzemchak had bases-clearing blasts in a 20-4 victory over Massachusetts.
West Virginia, which plays a three-game series at Baylor this weekend, is ranked in every major poll this week, including
Baseball America, No. 17
D1Baseball.com, No. 18
Collegiate Baseball, No. 18
USA Today, No. 21
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, No. 21
Perfect Game, No. 22
