
Three Home Runs, Bullpen Carry WVU Over Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The West Virginia baseball team clinched a Big 12 series victory on Sunday, downing Kansas State, 10-6, at Tointon Family Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 21-7 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 while the Wildcats fall to 19-11 and 5-4 in conference play.
The Mountaineers hit three home runs on the day, two-run shots from sophomore Grant Hussey and junior Braden Barry as well as solo home run from redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely. Hussey added also added a double as part of a 3-for-4 day.
On the mound, four relievers combined to throw 6.1 innings with five strikeouts while allowing just two runs in the ninth with WVU up big. Freshman Robby Porco picked up his third win of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings while redshirt-freshman David Hagaman threw 2.2 hitless innings with a pair of punchouts.
For the first time this weekend, the Mountaineers scored first with three runs in the second. Graduate student Kevin Dowdell knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly before Hussey crushed a 3-1 pitch over the videoboard in right field for a two-run homer.
Kansas State answered in the home half with four runs, getting a three-run home run from Roberto Pena, his first of two on the day.
In the third, sophomore JJ Wetherholt led off with a double before Barry hit his sixth home run of the season to put the Mountaineers back on top. Wetherholt tacked on another run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
West Virginia continued to expand its lead as McNeely hit his sixth home run of the season in the fifth before WVU put the game away in the ninth with three runs, getting an RBI single from Barry and a two-run single from junior Landon Wallace.
The Mountaineers will remain on the road for an in-state matchup with Marshall on Wednesday in Charleston. First pitch from GoMart Ballpark is set for 6 p.m.
