Box Score STILLWATER, Okla. (April 15, 2023) – For the second time this season, the West Virginia baseball team clinched a Big 12 road series victory as the Mountaineers defeated No. 18 Oklahoma State, 9-5, Saturday evening at O'Brate Stadium. WVU improves to 25-10 and 5-3 in the Big 12 while the Cowboys fall to 23-13 and 7-7 in conference play.
Nine-hole hitter
Tevin Tucker and leadoff man
Braden Barry were all over the basepaths as they combined for five hits, six runs, and two stolen bases.
Landon Wallace, hitting in the two-hole, was the beneficiary as he drove in four runs, with the big hit being a three-run home run.
Sophomore
Aidan Major earned the win by throwing the final 5.1 innings on the mound with eight strikeouts and no walks while allowing just one run on two hits.
Oklahoma State took the early lead with two unearned runs in the first. In 10 games where West Virginia has allowed a run in the first inning, the Mountaineers are now 9-1.
WVU tied up the game with two runs in the third as graduate student
Dayne Leonard hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. When the ball was thrown to third, the pitcher went back to the mound without the baseball, resulting in a balk and a second run to come across to score.
The Cowboys retook the lead in the fourth with two runs, but the Mountaineers responded in the fifth with three runs of their own on a single by Wallace, a run-scoring double play, and a clutch two-out base knock from redshirt-senior
Caleb McNeely.
In the seventh, OSU evened up the game with a run, but a key strikeout from Major with a runner on second kept the game tied.
With two outs and nobody on in the top of the eighth, freshman
Logan Sauve got the rally started with a walk before Tucker and Barry both singled to give WVU the lead. The big blow then came off the bat of Wallace as he blasted a three-run home run the other way to extend the Mountaineer lead.
That was more than enough for Major as he retired the final six batters to come to the plate, including a strikeout to end the game.
The Mountaineers will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
