
Quinerly Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Junior guard JJ Quinerly of the West Virginia University women's basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
The Norfolk, Virginia, native had a career day scoring 30 points in the Mountaineers' 77-72 win over Wright State on Monday, Dec. 18, at the WVU Coliseum. She added six steals in the win.
Quinerly scored 30 points in a game for the first time in her career, scoring over 20 points for the fifth straight contest this season.
West Virginia will face Niagara on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. ET, at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

Notes: The Mountaineers broke the century mark for just the 25th time in program history against Delaware State on Dec. 10 … West Virginia has held its opponents to just 22.5% from 3 this season, which is the 13th-best mark in the country ... they add top-11 rankings in scoring defense (51.2), steals per game (14.8), turnover margin (9.89) and turnovers forced per game (25.1) … Quinerly (18.4), sophomore guard Jordan Harrison (13.1) and fifth-year senior guard Lauren Fields (11.3) pace WVU's offensive effort as the trio averages double-digit scoring per game … the trio all average over 2.9 steals per contest, serving as the only NCAA team in the country with three players averaging double figures and over 2.9 steals … Harrison averages 6.4 assist per game, which is the 16th-best mark in the country.

Last Week in Swimming and Diving: During the first two days of the Almost Heaven LC Open, multiple Mountaineers placed first in events ... freshman Trevor Hudson placed first in the men's 800-meter freestyle (8:43.47) ... freshman Madeline Smutny placed first in the women's 400-meter freestyle (4:27.20), senior William Mullen placed first in the 400-meter freestyle (4:05.35) and senior Danny Berlitz finished in first place in the men's 200-meter individual medley (2:01.70) event ... sophomore Mia Cheatwood placed second in the 50-meter freestyle (27.10) event.
Notes: For the year, senior Danny Berlitz has won 17 individual events for the Mountaineers ... he also was a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that set a pool record (2:58.62) at the Keating Aquatics Center against Cincinnati on Oct. 28.
