No. 23 West Virginia Falls To Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – The West Virginia University wrestling team started its weekend in Oklahoma with a 18-15 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners at McCasland Field House on Friday night.
The Mountaineers (7-2, 1-2 Big 12) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after registering back-to-back decisions in the first two bouts of the night.
Oklahoma (7-3, 1-1 Big 12) chose to start the dual at heavyweight, which setup a showdown between No. 20 Michael Wolfgram and No. 18 Josh Heindselman in the opening match. Wolfgram scored a late takedown in the third period to earn a 3-1 decision and put West Virginia in front by three. He also evened up his rivalry with Heindselman at two wins apiece.
At 125 pounds, No. 7 Killian Cardinale added a late takedown in his match as well to outlast No. 22 Joey Prata for a 3-2 decision.
OU responded by winning the next two matches at 133 and 141 to tie the dual at 6-6. The Sooners earned six more points from a injury default at 149 pounds to hold a 12-6 advantage going into the intermission.
Out of the break, the Sooners registered another decision at 157 pounds to increase their lead to nine (15-6), but WVU answered by collecting consecutive decisions at 165 and 174 to pull within three (15-12). Junior Peyton Hall picked up a 8-2 decision, before senior Scott Joll took No. 21 Darrien Roberts down three times to earn his second win over a ranked opponent.
Redshirt sophomore Austin Cooley, ranked in the top 30 at 197 pounds, ended the night with a 8-1 decision over Carson Berryhill.
Up next, the Mountaineers remain in Oklahoma to take on No. 12 Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. ET.
