MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23-ranked West Virginia University men's soccer team fell to Yale, 2-1, on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (2-3) scored the opening goal in the fourth minute of play, but the Bulldogs (1-0-2) answered with the night's final two tallies, including the game-winner in the 88th minute. The loss snapped WVU's 15-match, home unbeaten streak.
For the second consecutive game, West Virginia found the back of the net in the first five minutes of action. Senior midfielder Luke McCormick and sophomore midfielder Max Trethewey set up the threat, before redshirt junior midfielder/defender Sergio Ors Navarro finished the fourth-minute goal to put the Mountaineers up, 1-0.
The tally was the Castellon, Spain, native's first of the season. Additionally, it marked Trethewey's third straight game with an assist. What's more, McCormick also was credited with an assist on the goal, the 17th of his career, which is tied for No. 6 in program history.
From there, the Mountaineers dominated possession but conceded a foul inside the box, allowing Yale to tie the match with a 38th-minute, penalty-kick goal.
The two sides returned to the locker room for halftime at 1-1.
After the Mountaineers had their chances in the second half, junior goalkeeper Jackson Lee made a crucial save in the 86th minute to keep the match tied. However, the Bulldogs went ahead two minutes later to secure the victory.
Despite the loss, WVU finished with sizeable advantages in several categories. The Mountaineers outshot Yale, 13-6, and they held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman forward Marcus Caldeira led the West Virginia attack with three shots – two on goal – while junior midfielder Ryan Baer added two shots.
Friday's match marked the first-ever meeting between WVU and Yale. Overall, the Mountaineers are now 5-5 all-time against Ivy League competition.
Up next, West Virginia returns to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium to close a three-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 16, against new league foe Coastal Carolina in the program's first Sun Belt Conference match. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
