
WVU Caps Homestand with Backyard Brawl

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team concludes its five-game homestand with the Backyard Brawl against rival Pitt on Tuesday, May 10.
First pitch at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
Tickets to the game are still available at WVUGAME.com, by calling 1-800-WVU GAME, at the Mountaineer Ticket Office inside the WVU Coliseum or on game day at the ballpark's box office. Of note, all reserved seats have been sold.
At the ballpark, the first 300 fans in attendance will receive a gold, WVU mini helmet. The game also features a photobooth setup on the Party Deck in right field, and fans can play Baseball Bingo for a chance to win prizes.
Live stats of the game can be found on WVUsports.com. The matchup also will air live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Mountaineer Sports Network on 100.9 WZST-FM, as well as various affiliates throughout the state, the WVU Gameday app, the free Varsity Network app and WVUsports.com. Additionally, Tuesday's game can be found on SiriusXM Channel 375.
WVU (28-18) holds a 111-93 advantage over Pitt in the all-time series. The two squads have already met twice this season, with each winning a game. The Panthers downed West Virginia, 9-6, on March 30, at Cost Field in Pittsburgh, before the Mountaineers responded with a 3-2 victory in 11 innings on April 20, at PNC Park.
In all, WVU has won eight of the last 10 meetings against Pitt.
West Virginia also has won 30 of its last 32 midweek, home games, dating back to April 19, 2016. The squad is 106-61 all-time at Monongalia County Ballpark since it opened in 2015.
Last time out, the Mountaineers dropped a series to then-No. 18 Texas, from May 7-8, in Morgantown. The Longhorns took both games of a May 7 doubleheader (5-2 and 11-0) to begin the three-game set, before WVU grabbed an 8-6 win in the series finale.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Watters struck out a career-high 15 batters and yielded just one walk in 6.1 innings of work against UT in the series opener. For his efforts, he was named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week list on May 9.
Additionally, redshirt junior catcher/infielder Dayne Leonard was named the Co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on May 9. He hit .400 in four games last week, including a two-run home run against Texas on May 7, as well as a 2-for-3 day with a career-high four RBI on May 8.
In the series finale against Texas, fifth-year senior right-handers Trey Braithwaite and Chase Smith, as well as redshirt junior right-hander Noah Short, combined to toss 8.2 innings out of the bullpen in the win. Braithwaite was awarded the victory, his third of the year, while Short earned his second save.
The Mountaineers continue to sit at No. 2 nationally in stolen bases, with 139, which is good for the most in single-season program history. Individually, junior outfielder Victor Scott II's 35 stolen bases are the fifth-most in the country and No. 1 in WVU's single-season history.
At the plate, sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook leads the club with a .331 average. He's one of four Mountaineers hitting .300 or better this spring.
Tenth-year coach Randy Mazey is 291-226 with the Mountaineers. He also has 478 career wins in 16 total seasons as a head coach.
Meanwhile, fourth-year coach Mike Bell has led Pitt to a 26-19 record this season. The Panthers also are 12-11 in ACC play and coming off a series win over Duke in Pittsburgh last weekend.
Tatem Levins leads Pitt in a variety of offensive categories, including average (.319), hits (53), home runs (13) and RBI (43). Of note, Pitt is in search of its first win at Monongalia County Ballpark since April 12, 2016.
