Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team earned an 8-6 win over No. 18 Texas on Sunday afternoon at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Mountaineers trailed early but scored eight of the game's final 11 runs in the series finale of this weekend's three-game set. After falling behind, 3-0, in the first inning, WVU (28-18, 10-8 Big 12) scored three runs in the second, one in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth. In all, the squad outhit the Longhorns, 11-10.
Fifth-year senior right-handed pitcher
Trey Braithwaite earned the win, bumping his record to 3-0 on the year, while Tristan Stevens took the loss for UT. Additionally, redshirt junior right-hander
Noah Short nailed down his second save of the spring.
"I think it's pretty obvious with how we respond, especially when (Texas) threw up three in the first inning," WVU coach
Randy Mazey said. "An average team, a team without leadership would've just rolled over right there. But we found a way. We kept scratching and clawing, and so many guys had so many great games."
After Texas (34-17, 11-10 Big 12) tallied its three-spot in the first, the Mountaineers tied it with a big, second frame. First, freshman infielder
Grant Hussey hit a two-run single, before redshirt junior infielder
Tevin Tucker's RBI triple tied the game at 3.
Then, UT scored a pair in the fourth to earn its second lead of the day. But the Mountaineers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half, as Hussey drove in his third run on a double down the line in left.
The Washington, West Virginia, native finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
In the sixth, the Longhorns loaded the bases with one out, looking to extend their lead. But Braithwaite got a pair of big outs to get WVU out of the rally unharmed.
Braithwaite tossed 4.1 innings, allowing just one, unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts. He fired 85 pitches, the most in his West Virginia career.
Moments later, WVU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. After the hosts loaded the bases, redshirt junior catcher/infielder
Dayne Leonard smacked a bases-clearing double down the right-field line to give the Mountaineers a 7-5 advantage.
The Mountaineers added an insurance run in the eighth when Leonard registered an RBI single to stretch the lead to three. The Spring Green, Wisconsin, native finished 2-for-4 with four RBI for the afternoon.
Texas scored a run in the ninth but couldn't put together a late rally against Short, who finished the job for the Mountaineers. Together, Braithwaite and Short teamed with fifth-year senior right-hander
Chase Smith to log 8.2 innings out of the bullpen for WVU in the win.
"Those three guys hadn't pitched this weekend, so they were all fresh," Mazey said. "We couldn't stand there and let them score five or six before bringing those guys in. They all did an unbelievable job."
Along with Hussey and Leonard, sophomore catcher
McGwire Holbrook and sophomore utility
Ben Abernathy, who came on as a pinch hitter in the sixth, each enjoyed multiple-hit efforts on Sunday. What's more, seven of the Mountaineers' 11 hits in the win came from the six, seven, eight and nine hitters.
Following the series, WVU is now 16-13 all-time against Texas, including 8-4 in Morgantown. Additionally, the Mountaineers remain the only Big 12 team without a three-game losing streak this season.
Up next, West Virginia concludes its five-game homestand with the Backyard Brawl against Pitt on Tuesday, May 10. First pitch at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
