West Virginia Opens Five-Game Homestand with UC

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team returns home to take on Charleston (W.Va.) on Wednesday, May 4.
First pitch at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark is set for 6 p.m. ET. The contest opens a five-game homestand for the Mountaineers.
Admission to the game is free for all fans. Additionally, live stats will be available at WVUsports.com, and fans can listen to the game on the Mountaineer Sports Network on 100.9 WZST-FM, as well as various affiliates throughout the state, the WVU Gameday app, the free Varsity Network app and WVUsports.com.
Of note, Wednesday's game will not be televised. At the ballpark, fans can play Baseball Bingo with a chance to win prizes.
WVU (26-16, 9-6 Big 12) is set to meet UC for the first time since March 27, 1991. WVU holds a 17-4 advantage in the all-time series.
Last time out, the Mountaineers won a conference series at Kansas, from April 29-May 1, in Lawrence, Kansas. After dropping a 7-3 decision in the series opener, West Virginia bounced back for a 10-7 win in the middle game and a 10-8 victory in the finale.
WVU slugged 10 home runs in the three-game set, including nine in the final two games of the weekend. Freshman infielder Grant Hussey left the yard three times against KU, earning WVU Student-Athlete of the Week honors along the way.
In all, 14 of the Mountaineers' 24 hits in the final two games of the Kansas series went for extra-bases.
WVU has won 29 of its last 31 midweek, home games, dating back to April 19, 2016. The squad is 104-59 all-time at Monongalia County Ballpark since it opened in 2015.
The Mountaineers entered the week ranked No. 2 nationally in stolen bases, with 135. The squad has already stolen more bases than any other season in program history. Individually, junior outfielder Victor Scott II's 33 stolen bases sit at No. 4 in the nation and are the most by one player in WVU's single-season history.
Senior outfielder Austin Davis, who is one stolen base shy of tying for the No. 2 all-time mark at West Virginia, leads the club with a .335 average at the plate. Three other Mountaineers – sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook (.331), sophomore outfielder Braden Barry (.308) and redshirt junior catcher Dayne Leonard (.300) – also are hitting .300 or better this spring.
Tenth-year coach Randy Mazey is 289-224 with the Mountaineers. He also has 476 career wins in 16 seasons as a head coach.
Charleston is led by coach Robbie Britt, who has the Golden Eagles out to a 30-13 mark this spring. The squad also is 22-6 in Mountain East Conference play.
UC has won three MEC championships and has played in three Division II NCAA Regionals since 2018.
Tyler Dellerman leads the Golden Eagles with a .424 average at the plate with 11 home runs, 14 doubles, 48 runs scored and 57 RBI. He leads a strong-hitting club, which has a team batting average of .327.
