MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt sophomore Michael Wolfgram of the West Virginia University wrestling team is set to make his NCAA tournament debut after collecting one of the 44 at-large berths into the field, announced by the NCAA on Tuesday.
The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, ratings percentage index, coaches ranking and conference tournament finish.
Wolfgram is coming off a seventh-place showing at the Big 12 Championship to finish one spot short of the six allocations presented to the conference's heavyweight division. The York, Pennsylvania, native enters the tournament with a 20-9 overall record, including five wins over ranked opponents.
With the second-year starter in the mix at heavyweight, the Mountaineers will send four grapplers to compete on the national stage for the second straight year. Wolfgram joins redshirt senior Killian Cardinale (125), and sophomores Peyton Hall (165) and Dennis Robin (174), as the trio broke the allocation threshold of their respective weight classes during the 2022 Big 12 Championship to clinch an automatic bid. Robin, like Wolfgram, braces for his first trip to nationals, while Cardinale and Hall prep for their third and second appearances, respectively, at the three-day event.
Final seeding and brackets for this year's event will be revealed on Wednesday, March 9, during the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship Selection Show on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. ET.
The NCAA Championships will feature 330 wrestlers across ten weight classes clashing for a spot on the podium from March 17-19 in Detroit, Michigan. Detroit hosts the postseason event for the first time in NCAA Championship history.
