Cardinale and Hall Reach Big 12 Semifinals
March 05, 2022 05:04 PM | Wrestling
TULSA, Okla. – Redshirt senior Killian Cardinale and sophomore Peyton Hall led the way for the West Virginia University wrestling team by advancing to the semifinals of their respective weight classes, as the first session of the 2022 Big 12 Championship came to a close, inside the BOK Center, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Cardinale, the top seed at 125 pounds, received a first-round bye prior to blanking No. 8 seed Jace Koelzer (N. Colorado) and scoring an 8-0 major decision. In dominating fashion, the redshirt senior scored a takedown in all three periods and would not relinquish his grip in either scenario to keep Koelzer on his stomach until time ran out.
With the win, Cardinale makes his first appearance in the semifinals at the conference tournament, where he will battle No. 4 seed Trevor Mastrogiovanni (Oklahoma State) in a rematch from last season's Big 12 Championship. The Bristow, Virginia, native recorded a 7-1 decision over Mastrogiovanni to earn a spot in the third-place match.
Unlike Cardinale, Hall wrestled twice as the No. 2 seed at 165 pounds. The sophomore captured a pair of major decisions over Wyoming's Colton Voorhees (11-3) and Iowa State's Isaac Judge (13-5), outscoring both opponents by a combined 16 points.
Hall heads into the semifinals against the No. 3 seed Austin Yant (Northern Iowa). The Chester, West Virginia, native scored the much-needed takedown in the first overtime period to seal a 4-2 decision over Yant in the duo's previous meeting on Feb. 5.
Redshirt sophomores Jeffrey Boyd (149) and Anthony Carman (184) won their opening round matches, but later dropped battles in the quarterfinals to compete in the consolation bracket for a shot at the final two allocations in their respective weight classes.
Freshman Garett Lautzenheiser also picked up a first-round win in his first-ever Big 12 Championship bout at 133 pounds. Lautzenheiser took down No. 4 seed Kellyn March (North Dakota State) in the first minute of the match and tacked on another in the third, which turned into a four-point near fall. The Louisville, Ohio, native hung on to a 9-5 decision but heads to consolation bracket after falling in the quarterfinals to No. 5 seed Ramazan Attasauov (Iowa State).
Additionally, senior Caleb Rea (141), redshirt junior Alex Hornfeck (157), sophomore Dennis Robin (174), senior Jackson Moomau (197), and redshirt sophomore Michael Wolfgram (HWT) will compete in the consolation brackets.
Session two will showcase the semifinals as well as the consolation quarterfinals at 6 p.m. ET. Fans can continue to watch all of the championship action on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, with live stats on TrackWrestling.
