West Virginia Falls to Penn

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis continued its homestand on Saturday, March 5, as the Mountaineers fell to the Quakers, 6-1, at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
"We're in a tough spot overall," Mountaineers coach Miha Lisac said. "We're battling through injuries. What we're trying to do, as a team, is come together and fill the holes that we need to fill to win these matches. In singles, we came out and competed, but one of the areas where we need to be better, is starting off doubles with more energy.
It's a quick turn-around for tomorrow's match against Delaware. We need to prepare and recover mentally and physically. We need to put this match behind us and look forward to what tomorrow will present us."
Saturday afternoon's competition began with doubles play, where Penn was able to get on the board early and claim the doubles point.
Freshman Tatiana Lipatova and senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia fell to Sabine Rutlauka and Eileen Wang, 6-1.
In the No. 1 doubles spot, freshman Camilla Bossi and junior Ting-Pei Chang battled back to almost tie up the match, but ultimately came up short to Iuliia Bryzgalova and Marija Curnic, 6-4.
Freshmen pair Kendall Kovick and Michaela Kucharova's match against Amanda Chan and Gavrielle Smith went unfinished.
Penn goes up 3-0, after Chang fell to Rulauka in two-straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Next up, in a back-and-forth battle, Lipatova falls to Smith, 7-6, 6-2.
In the No. 1 slot, the Quakers secure the match, with Bryzgalova's win over Kovick. The freshman takes the first set, 6-2, but fell in the second 0-6, to force the tie-breaker. In the final set, Bryzgalova topped Kovick, 6-2.
Kucharova fell to Curnic in two-straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, before freshman Catherine Wassick had her collegiate debut against Saige Roshkoff (1-6, 1-6).
The Mountaineers avoided the sweep, as Bossi defeated Eileen Wang, 6-2, 6-2.
