MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Kicking off with its annual 4v4 Breast Cancer Tournament on Sunday, March 6, the West Virginia University women's soccer team's 2022 spring has been announced.
Open to boys and girls in grades 3-8, as well as college-age students and adults, each team of three players is paired with a WVU women's soccer student-athlete or Mountaineer coach. West Virginia's annual tournament aims to increase awareness on the importance of early detection of breast cancer, while also raising money for the WVU Cancer Institute's Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
Over the past 15 years, WVU has raised more than $150,000 through the annual tournament.
"This is a huge event where we have the opportunity to do something bigger than the game of soccer," West Virginia coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We take pride in raising funds for the fight against breast cancer. Our student-athletes and staff appreciate everything the community does to support us during the season, and we look forward to this day of soccer each spring to connect with our fans and raise money for breast cancer research."
Following its 4v4 tournament, WVU officially opens spring competition with a pair of back-to-back home contests at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers welcome Virginia Tech to Morgantown on Sunday, March 27, before competing against Penn State on Saturday, April 2.
West Virginia's first road trip of the spring begins with a round-robin tournament hosted by James Madison in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on Sunday, April 10. WVU will take on Maryland, Liberty and JMU in a four-team, round-robin format.
WVU then travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to take on Pitt on Thursday, April 14, before concluding the spring campaign against 2021 Sweet Sixteen qualifiers Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., on Sunday, April 24.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 10-5-5 season in 2021, as they recorded their 22nd straight season with 10 wins or more. Senior
