
Big 12 Play Begins at TCU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team opens Big 12 Conference play with a three-game trip to No. 10 TCU, from April 1-3, in Fort Worth, Texas.
First pitch of Friday's series opener at Lupton Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET, while Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled for 3 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
Fans can follow all of this weekend's action with live stats, found on WVUsports.com. Additionally, all three games will air live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Mountaineer Sports Network on 100.9 WZST-FM, as well as various affiliates throughout the state, the WVU Gameday App and WVUsports.com.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Watters (2-1, 2.25 ERA) is set to get the start on the mound on Friday, while TCU counters with right-hander Riley Cornelio (3-1, 3.37 ERA). On Saturday, sophomore left-hander Ben Hampton (4-1, 2.68 ERA) goes against right-hander Cam Brown (2-2, 4.50 ERA), while Sunday's matchup is to be determined.
WVU (14-9, 0-0 Big 12) is 6-23 all-time against TCU, as well as 85-103 against Big 12 opponents since joining the league in 2013. Last year, the Horned Frogs swept the Mountaineers in Morgantown.
Earlier this week, West Virginia split a pair of midweek, road games. First, the Mountaineers took down in-state foe Marshall, 7-3, on March 29, in Huntington, before falling at Pitt, 9-6, on March 30, in Pittsburgh.
Fifth-year senior right-hander Zach Bravo tossed six, shutout innings against the Thundering Herd to earn the win, while WVU combined to hit three home runs at the plate. Against Pitt, West Virginia trailed, 6-0, early, before tying the game at 6 in the fourth inning on junior outfielder Victor Scott II's three-run homer. However, the Panthers scored the final three runs of the night to earn the Backyard Brawl victory.
The Mountaineers enter the weekend ranked No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12 in stolen bases, with 88. In all, the club was stolen multiple bases in 18 of its 23 games.
Sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook continues to lead the team with a .328 average. Freshman infielder Grant Hussey has a team-leading six homers, while Scott II, who has left the yard in each of the last two games, has five big flies and is No. 1 on the team with 22 RBI.
On the base paths, senior outfielder Austin Davis has 14 stolen bases in 2022, as well as 49 in his career, good for No. 5 in program history. Scott II has swiped 21 bags this season, good for No. 3 nationally. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native ranks No. 6 in WVU history with 45 stolen bases.
On the mound, Hampton has 39 strikeouts in 37.0 innings of work this season and has tallied four consecutive quality starts.
TCU is led by first-year coach Kirk Saarloos, who has the Horned Frogs out to an 18-7 start to the 2022 campaign. The squad also is 5-1 in Big 12 action and coming off a three-game sweep of Kansas State at home last weekend.
This week, the Frogs have dropped a pair of home games to Abilene Christian (6-2 on March 29) and UTSA (12-8 on March 30). In all, TCU is 9-2 in Fort Worth this season.
The Horned Frogs are ranked as high as No. 10 in the Perfect Game Top 25 poll this week. TCU also checks in at No. 12, according to D1Baseball.com.
Infielder Tommy Sacco is a .376 hitter so far this spring to lead the team. He also has posted a team-best 10 doubles, and five homers. Infielder David Bishop, meanwhile, has 37 RBI, good for No. 2 in the conference.
Elsewhere, Cornelio has led the way with a 3-1 record and 3.37 ERA in 34.2 innings, while left-hander River Ridings has seven saves out of the bullpen.
