
West Virginia Meets Marshall in Huntington

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team travels to Huntington, West Virginia, for a midweek matchup at Marshall on Tuesday, March 29.
First pitch at the Kennedy Center YMCA is set for 3 p.m. ET.

Fifth-year senior right-handed pitcher Zach Bravo (1-0, 6.92 ERA) is set to get the start on the mound for the Mountaineers, while Marshall counters with right-hander Ryan Capuano (1-3, 8.87 ERA).
WVU is 50-25 all-time against Marshall, including wins in 10 of the last 11 meetings. The two schools met three times in 2021, with the Mountaineers taking the season series, 2-1.
The Mountaineers (13-8) are coming off a series sweep over Youngstown State, from March 24-25, at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown. WVU won the opener, 6-4, last Thursday, before it took both games of a doubleheader, 9-3, and, 13-2, on Friday.
Freshman infielder JJ Wetherholt led the way with four hits, six runs, a double, a home run, five RBI and four stolen bases in the series, while freshman infielder Grant Hussey hit a pair of two-run homers in Game 1 of the doubleheader and finished with a team-high six RBI for the week.
On the mound, sophomore left-hander Ben Hampton recorded his fourth consecutive quality start on Friday against the Penguins, logging 7.0 innings, while allowing just two runs with five strikeouts in a win. Junior right-hander Jacob Watters pitched five, no-hit innings in Game 2 of the twin bill, finishing with five strikeouts and the win.
WVU enters the week ranked No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12 Conference in stolen bases, with 79. The squad stole 11 bases against Youngstown State in Game 2 of last Friday's doubleheader, the most in a single game in the program's Big 12 era.
Sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook continues to lead the team with a .333 average at the plate, while Hussey is No. 1 on the club with six home runs and 19 RBI. In all, the Mountaineer lineup features six players with 10 or more RBI in the season's first 21 games.
Marshall is led by coach Jeff Waggoner. The Thundering Herd is off to a 12-11-1 start to the 2022 season, including 2-4 in Conference USA action.
Last weekend, MU dropped a series to Rice in Huntington. After falling in the first two games of the series, the Herd topped the Owls, 5-4, on Sunday.
Luke Edwards leads Marshall with a .340 average at the plate, while his five home runs also pace the team. He has 22 RBI this season, second to Ryan Leitch's team-leading 25.
Capuano has made three previous starts against WVU, including twice in 2021. He has logged 23.1 innings in five starts this spring.
