West Virginia Sweeps Towson to Closes Non-Conference Slate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis concludes its non-conference slate with a 7-0 sweep over Towson on Saturday, March 12, at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
"It was a good day for us today and a good way to finish out the non-conference part of the season," Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac said. "The team did a good job by coming out in doubles play with energy and carried it well through singles. We'll use this as momentum and carry it going into Big 12 Conference play."
Saturday's matchup against Towson began with doubles play, as the Mountaineers (7-7, 0-0 Big 12) swept the Tigers 3-0. All three pairs topped UT 6-1, starting with freshman Camilla Bossi and junior Ting-Pei Chang defeating Themis Haliou and Sissi Axelsson.
Next up, senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia and freshman Tatiana Lipatova secured the point for WVU, against Amelia Lawson and Lea Kosanovic. To wrap up doubles play, freshman pair Kendall Kovick and Michaela Kucharova rounded out the sweep over Jessica Assenmacher and Antonia Lawson.
During singles play, West Virginia continued to sweep the competition, with a 6-0 run over the Tigers. Starting with Kovick, in the No. 1 spot, topping Amelia Lawson in two-straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, to tally the first singles point for the Mountaineers.
Bovolskaia extended the win streak after claiming the matchup against Assenmacher, 6-4, 6-2. Following Bovolskaia's win, in the No. 4 slot, Kucharova clinched the match for WVU, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sarah Pospischill.
Bossi takes the Mountaineers lead to 5-0. The freshman dominated play against Sissi Axelsson, claiming the match in two-straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Senior Penny Hsieh concluded WVU's sweep over Towson, after taking the matchup against Elessa Jacobs, 6-0, 6-1.
The Mountaineers move the all-time record to 5-0 over Towson, including a back-to-back 7-0 sweep.

West Virginia continues its homestand and opens Big 12 play as No. 8 Texas and No. 33 Baylor travels to Morgantown, leading off with the Longhorns on Friday, March 18, at 2 p.m. ET. Following Friday's match, the Mountaineers conclude their homestand against the Bears, with first serve set for Sunday, March 20, at 11 a.m.
