MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team opened Big 12 Conference play on Friday, March 18, as the Mountaineers fell, 7-0, to No. 6 Texas, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts, in Morgantown.
"I thought as a team we battled very well in singles today," Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac said. "Texas has one of the more talented teams in the country. They're deeply disciplined, and they play big points very well. We found a way to give ourselves opportunities in matches and we found a way to battle and continue to play our game.
We will take the confidence from this match and continue to build through our Big 12 slate, as we host Baylor on Sunday."
Beginning in doubles, West Virginia (7-8, 0-1 Big 12) fell behind, 1-0, after Texas (12-3, 3-0 Big 12) took all three matches to clinch the first team point.
In singles, the Longhorns' Charlotte Chavatipon topped freshman Tatiana Lipatova, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia fell to No. 38 Kylie Collins, 6-1, 6-2, to put Texas up 3-0.
No. 106 Sabina Zeynalova secured the match for UT after junior Ting-Pei Chang suffered a 6-0, 6-4 defeat. Freshman Michaela Kucharova came up short, 6-4, 6-3, to Texas' Allura Zamarripa.
In the final two matches, the Mountaineers and the Longhorns went toe-to-toe. Freshman Camilla Bossi battled through three sets against No. 95 Malaika Rapolu. The freshman fell in the first set 1-6, to bounce back and claim the second 6-3, forcing the tiebreaker. In the third and final set, Rapolu outlasted Bossi 6-2, tallying another point for Texas.
Wrapping up competition, freshman Kendall Kovick fell to No. 7 Peyton Stearns after a hard fought three-set battle. Kovick claimed the first match 3-6, but fell in the second 6-1, forcing the tiebreak. The freshman came up short, 3-6, to Stearn, to conclude Friday's contest.
