Mountaineers Bested by Kentucky

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (5-3, 0-0 Big 12) wrapped up their weekend road swing on Sunday, with a 3-4 loss to Kentucky, at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.
"It was a tough battle today and Kentucky brought the energy from the start and played really well in doubles," Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac said. "Our team battled back and we gave ourselves a chance to really turn the match in our favor. Our group continues to battle well and stick together."
Friday afternoon's competition began with doubles play, as freshmen pair Kendall Kovick and Tatiana Lipotova fell to Carla Girbau and Ellie Eades, 6-0.
The Wildcats claimed the doubles point as Carlota Molina and Lidia Gonzales bested sophomore Momoko Nagato and senior Penny Hsieh.
Junior Ting-Pei Chang and freshman Camilla Bossi's match went unfinished.
Sophomore Momoko Nagato and senior Penny Hsieh secured the doubles point for WVU, after topping Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte, 7-5.
During singles play, Kentucky put two more points on the board, before the Mountaineers were able to answer. In the No. 2 spot, Kovick fell to Fiona Arrese, 4-6, 4-6, while the Wildcat's Girbau outlasted Chang, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshmen Michaela Kucharova notched the first point for West Virginia, after defeating Gonzalez in three sets. The freshmen fell in the first set, 3-6, to bounce back and claim the second, 6-1, to force the tie-breaker. Kucharova put away the match with a 6-3 victory.
In the No. 3 spot, Nagato and Florencia Urrutia went back-and-forth in a three-set battle. The sophomore took the first set, 6-3, before Urrutia forced the tie-breaker, 6-3, and secured the match for the Wildcats, 6-3.
Freshmen Lipatova and Bossi won the last two matches for the Mountaineers. Lipatova bested Eades, 6-3, 5-7, 10-2, to remain undefeated. Bossi fought through three sets to take the matchup against Maialen Morante, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Looking Ahead
West Virginia returns to Morgantown on Saturday, Feb. 26, for another home doubleheader against George Washington and Toledo. First serve against GWU is set for 10 a.m., while the matchup against the Rockets begins at 3 p.m.
